Speaker Meeting 4th May 2020

Professor John Walker
Pandemic Opportunities for the Perfect Storm

The third Monday evening meeting using Zoom was a Speaker Meeting held on 4th May and was attended by 38 members. Club member Professor John Walker gave a talk on the impact of the Coronavirus which has forced a large number of the UK's workforce to work from home and rely more heavily on the use of technology to communicate by video and audible conferencing for the first time.

The Club members are now used to the new way of holding its meetings during the Lockdown and as well as hearing excellent speakers they are still able to make decisions to help the local community. The software has an option which is free and is available to all and is a good way of staying in touch with family and friends.

John told the members that criminal gangs and hackers were using the Pandemic to commit cyber crimes and fraud. Not only were large organisations such as the NHS and other medical institutions being targetted but there had been an increase in criminals trying to access bank and savings accounts. The Citizens Advice website has good advice on banking security and fraud.

John also outlined the problems relating to security for persons working from home for the first time using technology to run their business operations.
