Speaker Meeting 10th July 2017

Michael Longdon - District Governor, Rotary District 1220

The members of the Rotary Club of Church Wilne welcomed District Governor Michael Longdon to its meeting on Monday 10th July at the Royal Oak in Ockbrook.

Michael said this was just his 4th club visit having been the DG since 1st July. He brought greetings from Rotary International President Ian Riseley and Rotary GBI President Denis Spiller and his own club President Mike Chumside of the West Ashfield.

This year's Rotary theme is "Making a difference". As an organisation we have to change and embrace change. Rotary is many things to many people throughout the world. We serve humanity and he believes there is no better path than through Rotary membership.

A continuing battle for Rotary is the eradication of Polio and from 350 thousand world wide cases a year in the 1980s there has only been 6 so far this year and we must finish the job.

The growth in Rotary clubs is of paramount importance and there are exciting developments with Satellite clubs along with Rotaract and Interact clubs. Within District 1220 there abut 2,000 members from a populations of over 4 million and therefor lots of opportunities exist. This year it is hoped that 9 Satellite clubs will be set up.

A much higher profile for the youth will include many events for the young including musician of the year, the reintroduction of Youth Exchange, Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) and young chef to name but a few.

Michael promoted his District conference which is at Llandudno on 29/30th September and the 1st October. The RIBI President will be present along with many inspirational speakers. Plus entertainment throughout Friday and Saturday evenings.

There was a wide variety of questions put to Michael by the members and Church Wilne President Adrian in thanking the DG said "It had been a pleasure and honour to welcome him to the club so early in the new Rotary year".
