Speaker Meeting 4th July 2016
Cathy Griffin - Church Wilne Inner Wheel President

Inner Wheel President Cathy Griffin with President Simon Beal

The members of Church Wine Rotary Club welcomed Cathy Griffin to its speaker meeting at the Royal Oak in Ockbrook on Monday 4th July.

Cathy who is the president of the Church Wilne Inner Wheel Club gave an emotional talk and an insight into the Genesis Research Trust which is her and the Inner Wheel Club charity for the coming year.

Cathy said that despite countless breakthroughs in medical science; we still do not understand why some pregnancies will end in tragedy. For most of us having a child of our own is the most fulfilling experience of our lives. All of us can imagine the desperation and sadness of parents who lose a baby, and the life-shattering impact that a disabled or seriously ill child has on a family.

Genesis Research Trust raises money for the largest UK-based collection of Scientists and clinicians who research the causes and cures for conditions that affect the health of women and babies.

Their Chairman is Robert Winston who is a Professor of Science and Professor of Fertility Studies at Imperial College.

Cathy said that despite great advancements there are still some pregnancies that end in tragedy with something like 250 cases every week. On a personal note Cathy has a sister, brother and daughter who have had major problems since birth and her brother and sister are cared for by their 84 year old mother.

The objective of the Trust is to give financial support and assistance for medical research and the vision is to improve the well being of mothers and babies.

Cathy covered the many advancements made through each decade from the 1950s when Professor Ian Donald started the pioneering work at the Hammersmith Hospital.

Current projects include fatal programming, recent miscarriages, diseases in pregnant women, stem cells and many more.

Cathy continues to raise money for the charity which included 2 years ago a sponsored cycle ride in Zanzibar, which is part of Tanzania, and her next event, with the support of the Church Wilne Inner Wheel club, is to be a masked ball at Trent College in October.

There were many questions from the members following Cathy's talk and in his vote of thanks Rotarian Geoff Smith said it had been a passionate talk on something we so often take for granted and it is a remarkable charity.
