Rotarian Andy Cartwright gave an informative presentation on the Rotary Foundation to his fellow members of the Rotary Club of Church Wilne on Monday 5th October.

Andy said "The Rotary Foundation is our own charity and is the only charity of Rotary International and needs our support. It was established only 7 years after the foundation of Rotary in 1905 by the 6th President Arch Klump with an initial contribution equal in today's value of $369. However it wasn't until 1947 that the Foundation really took hold and was established on a firm financial footing".

Whilst many funds have been founded on the wealth of powerful and rich families our Foundation has been built by the generosity, goodwill and most importantly service of many thousands of Rotarians.

So much so that in the Rotary year 2013/14 the fund earned enough to provide grants of $234m and some was spent on the following: $129m on eradicate Polio with the Bill Gates Foundation matching it became $389. District and Global grants received $71m.

The Foundation is within the top 5% of worldwide foundations and charities for effective spend of funds with only 2% used for administration. Other well known charities spend over 10% on its administration.

The Foundation also focuses on providing clean water, fighting diseases such as Polio, Malaria and TB, pregnancies, education, doctors and doing good throughout the world.

Rotarian Peter Woods thanked Andy for the professional way he organised the recent club's Camphill project through the Foundation in conjunction with the Rotary club of Melkbos in South Africa.

In the clubs vote of thanks Andy Lord said it was most useful to let Rotarians know more about our own charity which links fellowship, service and education.
