Meeting 17th March 2014

Speaker: We welcomed Michael Hayne who is the Regional Representative for Cricket Derbyshire assigned by Derbyshire County Cricket Club.

Each district of the County has a regional representative who is a roving ambassador for DCCC. Michael gave a brief history of the Cricket Club which included its inauguration in 1870, its first full season in 1871 and they were also one of the original counties to play in the league. Successes have included County Championship winners back in 1935, more recently in 1981 NatWest winners off the final ball and in 1993 Benson & Hedges winners. In the year 2000 the league was split into the 1st and 2nd Division and the Club were in the 2nd division for 10 years, despite having a good player base but no overseas stars.

The Club were fortunate that former Chairman Don Amot, before leaving in March 2011, put many positive things into place before Chris Grant took on the role.  Michael spoke about how the Club is now focused on becoming a business with membership just 18% of all income. In 2012 they were promoted to the 1st Division with an excellent mixture of young and not so young players and whilst the following year they lost their place in the top league much had been learned. Michael spoke in detail about the Academy and its leadership under its Director of Cricket and other top coaches which is to match and mirror what England have been doing for many years.

The team are currently in Abbi Dabi playing New Zealand and Worcestershire and they are filled with confidence for the new season. All Twenty20 games are to be played on a Friday evenings and 1st Class games will start on a Sunday. We heard many interesting and amusing stories of players and incidents over the years and Michael finished by saying that Geoff Miller, who has just stepped down from the National selector, will be taking on the role of President of the Club.

Our Club's vote of thanks was given by Neil Hall, who has followed the Club for many years and was present at the winning of the Nat West and Benson & Hedges trophies. Neil congratulated them of their recent changes and wished them well for the new season.
